When she finished high school, knowing she wanted to be an actress, she decided to study acting with José Luis Gómez, at the Teatro de La Abadía.
Her professional debut in cinema came in 1998, under the direction of director Salvador García Ruiz, with the film Mensaka, for which she won the Best New Actress Award from the Actors Union. This was followed by three films shot in 2000, Terca Vida, Marta y alrededores and Las razones de mis amigos.
She has worked with Pedro Almodóvar on four occasions – Talk to her, Broken Embraces, The Passenger Lovers and Volver, a film for which she was the winner along with her colleagues for the Best Female Performance at the Cannes Film Festival – and with Alejandro Amenábar in Mar adentro the production which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and for which Lola received her first Goya Prize for Best Female Performance in a Lead Role.
Her second Goya would come with the movie Yo, también by Álvaro Pastor and Antonio Naharro. For this film she would also get the Silver Shell for the best actress at the San Sebastian International Festival.
She has also participated in films like Todo me pasa a mí, Piedras, Días de fútbol, Las chicas de la sexta planta, 10.000 noches en ninguna parte, Zama and No sé decir adiós, a film for which she was again nominated for the Goya Awards, 2017.
Her last film work Viaje al cuarto de una mujer by Celia Rico, where she shares the limelight with Anna Castillo.
