At 16 Cecilia began her training as an actress while completing her high school studies. In 1975 she participated in Juan José Jusid’s No toquen a la nena and Sergio Renán’s Growing up suddenly. Two years later she moved to Spain where she has developed a successful career. Her first appearances on film in her new home were in José Luis Garci’s The Green Pastures, Pedro Maso’s The Family, Fine, Thanks,  J. Porto’s The Semested We Loved Kim Novak, and Iván Zulueta’s Rapture, which would become a cult classic.

In 1980 she began a successful artistic relationship with Pedro Almodóvar with the film Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom, which was followed by Labyrinth of Passion, Dark Habits, What have I done to deserve this? and All about my mother with which she achieved international success.

In 1998 she became the first non-Spanish actress to win the Goya for Best Actress for her role in Adolfo Aristarain’s Martin H, a role for which she also won the Cóndor de Plata Award. Cecilia was again awarded the Best Actress award in 1999 for her role in Pedro Almodovar’s All about my mother, a film that won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

Cecilia has also participated in Carlos Suarez’s El Jardin Secreto, Gerardo Vera’s Desire and Second skin. For Television Española, she has also had roles in Adolfo Artistarain’s Aventuras de Pepe Carvalho and Emilio Martínez Lázaro’s Todo Va Mal.

Now as a well established actress Cecilia returned to Argentina where she would take leading roles in a number of films including: A. Aristarain’s Deadly; Marcelo Piñeyro’s Cenizas del Paraíso; Alejandro Agresti’s A Night with Sabrina Love; Héctor Olviera’s Antigua, My life; and Fito Paez’s Privates Lives. She also starred in Antonio Serrano’s La Hija del Caníbal (Mexico and USA), the Taviani Brothers’ Luisa San Felice (Italy) and Rodrigo Sepúlveda’s Padrenuestro (Chile).

Highlights from Cecilia’s work on television include: Epitafios, Mujeres Asesinas, Amas de Casa Desesperadas, Trátame Bien, En Terapia and Historia de un Clan.

In 2012 she was again called upon by Pedro Almodóvar to star in I´m so excited, taking the role of Norma Boss. That same year she would star in Carlos Jaureguialzo’s Matrimonio together with Dario Grandinetti  and Breadcrumbs, a Spanish-Uraguayan coproduction directed by Manane Rodríguez. In 2013 she again worked with Dario Grandinetti on Philippe Blaband’s Relación Pornográfica.

In 2018, she returns to Spain where she participates in the film Pain and Glory by Pedro Almodóvar and in the Movistar + TV show, El embarcadero. In 2020, she stars in the first season of the Argentine series Los Internacionales, and she is also part of the cast of the feature film El prófugo directed by Natalia Meta, as well as starring in the Netflix thriller Crímenes de familia.

In 2022, she films the real-time movie Conversaciones sobre el odio alongside Maricel Álvarez. In the same year, she stars in Las fiestas directed by Ignacio Rogers. In 2023 she is part of the main cast of the acclaimed series La Mesías, in which Lola Dueñas also participates.

The same year she stars alongside Maricel Álvarez in the time-lapse film Conversaciones sobre el odio, and takes part in Las fiestas by Ignacio Rogers.
